Glowing skin really does start from within and today, we want to talk to you about one of the most effective ways to detox your skin from the inside out.
Everything from what we eat to environmental stressors and gut health really affects the overall vitality of your skin. It IS your biggest organ after all. Sure, there are a whole bunch of skincare products that will change the look of your skin, but if you really want long-term vitality, you need to cleanse from the inside out.
Foods that negatively affect the health of your skin
Being a vegan brand, we recommend following a plant-based diet. This way of eating is not only kind to our environment, but it also works wonders for your skin. If you don’t want to commit to a vegan diet, that’s totally fine. It can be quite limiting after all. Your best bet? Do your research and choose foods that won’t disrupt your natural hormones or cause inflammation.
These are some of the worst offenders:
- Alcohol it depletes the amount of zinc and magnesium in your body and is toxic to your liver.
- Meat it is known to slow down your digestive system and increase the bad bacteria in your gut.
- Dairy slows down the natural detoxification process.
- Gluten and wheat it can irritate your intestines leading to indigestion, bloating and constipation.
- Caffeine it dries out your skin and increases toxins in your body.
- Salt it dehydrates your body and slows down the detoxification process.
- Sugar it reduces good bacteria and leads to inflammation.
Foods that promote detoxification
Detoxification may seem scary at first, but fear not, nature has created the best gift for healthy skin. These foods will rid your body of harmful toxins, restore your natural balance and give you the energy and vitality you need.
- Avocado it is rich in potassium, promotes the absorption of good fats and cleanses the liver and intestines.
- Leafy, green vegetables they are rich in iron, rich in antioxidants and will reduce inflammation.
- Garlic not only does it flavor food, it has immune-boosting properties that help detoxify the liver and fight disease.
- Lemon It is packed with vitamin C which increases collagen production and helps cleanse the body of environmental stressors.
- Apples it can cleanse your body of toxins and lower your cholesterol.
- Tumeric it protects your body, promotes digestion and is known to be antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and a powerful antioxidant.
- Water Consumption is imperative to eliminate toxins, hydrate and cleanse your internal organs. Aim for at least 2 liters a day.
These foods will work to benefit your body and the overall health and appearance of your skin.
Gut health and your skin
More and more health professionals are linking gut health to a number of health problems. From ADHD in children to increasing disease and of course skin health. A healthy gut will absorb nutrients and minerals and properly cleanse toxins. An inefficient gut, however, will fail to retain nutrients and remove toxins from your bloodstream and organs.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so of course your appearance will suffer. Many skin concerns such as acne, inflammation, eczema and rosacea can be traced back to gut issues.
To balance your gut, make sure you avoid alcohol, sugar, processed foods and toxins. Stress and a sedentary lifestyle will also reduce the efficiency of your bowel. Instead, choose foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, exercise for 30 minutes a day, and commit to getting eight hours every night.
Detox juice
Detox doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The best way to get the good stuff without the pressure is to commit to a green juice every day. This recipe will detoxify, fight inflammation, and increase the good bacteria in your gut.
All you need is:
- 2 stalks of celery
- ½ cucumber
- 1 ½ cm ginger
- ½ cup parsley
- ½ lemon
- 1 green apple
- 2 cups of spinach
Use a cold press juicer to preserve all those delicious nutrients.
Follow this with a glass of warm water and a squeeze of lemon to kick start your detox.
Detox your skin
By doing the work inside you will promote the skin’s natural rejuvenation process. That said, following a natural skin care routine will remove toxins, increase blood flow, and support your detoxification. Choosing the right skincare for your skin type can be daunting, so we recommend following the expert advice of our founder and Naturopath, Barbara.
We love to keep your daily skincare routine stress-free and simple.
Start with a cleanser to effectively remove all makeup and dirt. Our Purify Facial Cleanser is made with tea tree oil, French lavender and echinacea that work together to minimize inflammation and cleanse the skin of impurities.
Exfoliation is a must in any good skin care routine, but even more so while detoxing as toxins will naturally come to the surface and be expelled through your pores. Exfoliation helps remove them along with dead skin cells to make way for new, detoxified skin.
Finally, keep hydrated with our Olive Skin Serum. Made from olive squalene, this smart serum replicates the natural squalene in our skin to deliver vital hydration.
Beauty starts from within. Treat your body right and your health will shine.
