There is a new lipstick launch from Makeup by Mario which is called the SuperSatin lipstick ($28 each). They just launched into Sephora in 18 shades and the formula is gorgeous! I was lucky enough to get them in PR so I’ve seen them all.
The formula is super creamy and opaque with full coverage. The texture is super smooth and while they are called ‘satin’ they pull more on the slightly creamy/shiny side in the finish. They feel a little thick when you drag them, but not heavy. The color adheres very well and has good staying power as long as your lips are not touching anything. Since it’s more of a traditional lipstick, it’s not transfer-proof, but I’m really impressed with the lasting power. The glossy/creamy finish makes them feel snug on the lips and slightly hydrating. There is a subtle vanilla scent, but it’s too subtle for me.
On the nails: Shade 175 Skieuse
The color gamut is quite good with a mix of neutrals, reds, bolds. I think neutrals are a bit hard to know how they will pull on your skin until you try them. I loved the way so many of his Ultra Suede Lipsticks looked in the tube and swatched, but most of them looked too light on my lips. For me, most of the new SuperSatin shades are easier to pull off, although there are definitely a few that didn’t work for my skin tone.
Quick note that some of the tones looked warmer in the tube, but on my lips they pulled much cooler/neutral. Most of you already know that I have a darker natural lip tone that looks almost purple at times. If you have a pinker or lighter lip color, I think most light tones will look much better on you than they do on me.
- Midtown it’s a stunning neutral pale pinkish beige (but it looks like a concealer to me)
- Flatiron it is light beige
- South Coast it’s a nude pink (slightly deeper than Midtown)
- Bronx Baby it’s a neutral-cool light brown pink
- (917) it’s a neutral-cool pink mauve
- Nolita it’s a mauve pink
- Dumbo it’s a 90s brown rose
- Soho it’s the perfect soft peach
- Girl on the town it’s a burnt orange
- Harlem it’s a classic red
- Chelsea it is an electric fire red shade
- West Village it’s a fuchsia pink
- Broadway it is a cool toned pink
- Tribeca it is a blue based red
- Rockefeller it’s a classic bold brick red
- Forest Hills it’s a brown plum
- Central park it is a deeper brown
- Girl in the city center it is an even deeper brown
I swatched a few of these for the blog, but if you want to see them all in action I posted them here on Reels (quick note the last shade shown is Downtown Girl, sorry for the typo!). For Skintone Reference I wear it Chanel No1 de Chanel Revitalizing Foundation in B40 (review + samples here).
Overall I really like these. Formula gets a solid A+, but not all colors work for me, which is to be expected. I think it’s rare that someone would love every shade in a lipstick launch. I think they have a wide range. I would love to see some of the MoistureGlow Lip Serums or Plumping Lip Colors in this kind of full coverage with a longer lasting formula.
My favorite is Soho. I also really like (917) and think I can make South Shore work sometimes, even though it’s pale, I might have to add a liner. According to many of you, Rockefeller is the winning shade, I didn’t try it for the blog but you can see it in my Reel. I agree it’s a very pretty classic kind of bold lip with the perfect undertone.
