Sara Landry It has gone a long way since it throws underground Raves in Austin, Texas. Last year, the producer, the DJ and the sound engineer (Dubbed “The High Sacred Technology”) became the first artist Techno to play Tomorrowland’s main scene, released EP’s debut Spiritual drivingand landed at #75 on the list of DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs.
Next? The American debut of its audiovisual tour-a high-level production featuring customized structures and essential art from the studio Scream – On the scene of Coachella’s Sahara. The attraction of the eternal to Coachella is a full time for Landry, who was originally set to appear at the Festival in April 2020 (much lower in the bill) before the pandemic brought everything.
“I was scheduled to be the act of the last day in 2020, and at that time, I was like,” Oh my God, this is this, this will be my big break that I have worked for five years for “,” Landry tells me over Zoom from the House of Amsterdam, still buzzing from an all-nighter. “And then the pandemic happened, so it’s a very surreal feeling to come back this year, they threw the composition and I play after three mafia, which is crazy.”
Coachella may seem like an unlikely stage for hard techno-a subtle characterized by high adjustments and knocking on bass lines and more connected to warehouses and underground clubs in Berlin or New York than in polished large US budget festivals. But bringing inflatable bpms to the masses was always part of Sara’s mo. For her, Techno is not just music – it is a laxy escape that is determined to share.
“I feel that it is such a misunderstood species, but there is so much variety and there is so much beauty in it and there are so many different ways you can make music and tell stories and share the feeling through it,” says Landry. “The origin of the Rave scene is in queer and black communities in Chicago and Detroit, and all the foundations were that it is a safe place for free self -expression to be yourself and enjoying yourself. So for me, that’s very important.”
Prior to her debut at Coachella, Landry talks about the eternal, who deals with Misogyny as a woman artist in a scene dominated by men, fashion and taking on the etiquette of the dancing mobile phone.
Refines29: Coachella will be the American debut of your new Eternalism tour. What can people expect from the set?
Sara Landry: We are developing the eternal eight months to one year now, thinking about how we can create something that is greater than displaying and connecting. I wanted to create something that felt really beautiful and fun, feminist, refreshing and interior. … We got a lot of inspiration from [Swiss artist] Hr giger To create this kind of other secular, foreign goddess in graphics.

You’re over a decade in your career – how did you first get into Djing?
I started learning dj 11 years ago and learning to produce 10 years ago. I had worked in the nightlife in mainstream clubs and managed to make my way to the dj kiosk and it was like … yes, I would like to know more about it.
My first serious Techno experience was November 2017. I had gone to Ableton Loop conference in Berlin and broke completely from the last day of the conference to go [nightclub] Berghain alone. I still have a recording on my phone Len Faki Playing the central floor, such as 134 bpm, grindy industrial German techno. Being an American girl from Texas, I had never seen a set like this. Threw my mind at that moment.
You are known to mix more mainstream music (such as Cardi B and Megan Ye Stallion’s “Wap”) in hard techno – which goes a little against the granules and has caught you a little flack between “Techno Purists”. What is the story behind your decision to bring to other species?
The remix of “WAP” was not so a serious creative effort, but more than an impulsive “let’s scratch this autism itch”. [Editor’s note: Landry has long been vocal about her neurodivergence.] At the same time, it also produces gnarly, grinding, industrial techno. When I started playing, it was on Raves of 100 people, underground clubs, in queer community dance scenes, so it was always something for homosexuals and girls. I’m from Texas. Meg from Texas. We love Meg. So, as, yes, I will put Megan’s stallion over a Kick Techno, and everyone will have to deal with it.
As a producer, it is also an exercise in collaboration with singers and vocal production in the way that more artists do. My background is in sound engineering, building everything from scratch, drums, all these things, so for me it was always a fun exercise. Homosexuals really worship it. Girls really love it. The technical cleaners … I mean, whatever, that’s not my job.
You Recently posted a tiktok Calling the misogyny you have encountered as you have taken to the stage. People blamed you for Being a “factory of industry” Although you have cleared your boat for over a decade. Have you been prepared for hate and how do you handle it?
“Bought or pressed her way” is what they always assume. I have experienced [misogyny] In every different taste, and it is one of those things where you are like, it certainly can’t be so bad. As we have certainly gone through it. But no, no, no, it’s so worse at the point that I gave my social control to my team for my mental health.
I’m a Beta Ableton tester, I have made a feature of Ableton Editorial, I have done main lessons, I have twitch streams, I mix all my own tracks and dominate a good piece of my pieces. And it doesn’t matter how much I do … because when people see me, they form an immediate opinion, especially because my career fell into the stratosphere so fast.
The old proverb that “lasts 10 years to be an overnight” is true, but misogyny is really crazy. Those of us are on tour, the girls and I, we all talk about it privately. When I began to pass it on, Amelie lens It has come out, and it was like, “hey, girl, don’t read comments. Focus on yourself, focus on your life. There are some others and come women djs who have gone through the same thing I have passed and paid forward, such as” hey, girl, ignore it. If someone is determined to hate you, they will hate you and there is nothing you can do for it. “
What is your download for people using mobile phones on the floor?
With the rare opportunity I can really go and enjoy a show, I’m not on my phone and I wish people in the crowd will not do so. If you have your phone all the time, I feel like missing part of the experience.
I think phones are a must -have bad and I can say which pieces really slaps from how many phones go up when I play, but at the same time, sometimes I want to go to the microphone and be like “kids, to put your fucking phones away.
You have sick style and it was recently front row Rick Owen’s Paris Fashion Week. You always have a fashion girl and how did your style evolve over your career?

I just love the idea of being able to tell a story and just become anyone you want like a chameleon. I’ve always been what I would say a “single piece”, as I have done the black thing for a decade now, maybe more.
I always loved Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester. Lady Gaga was a huge premature influence for me. I really show that I can meet her at coachella, because the first appearance I went was the Monster Ball tour. I made a custom uniform, and covered myself in sequins and rhinestones and got all the decorated. It was actually her musical videos and her fashion that brought me to my first love of high fashion, which was Alexander McQueen. May he rest in peace, an absolute genius.
As an experienced raver, what are some of the best tips of the music festival?
I stay with blister band aids, glossy lips and inhalations of essential oil. You can also get recovered travel perfume containers [for your favorite scents]So I always keep these on me – I never want to smell like bo. The other thing I would say is that it’s just a party if everyone gets home safe. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to be smart, careful and conservative when you get a party and look out for your friends. If you see someone who needs help, please help them. And if you need water in my set, tell me, and I’ll get you some water.
This interview has been elaborated and concentrated for clarity.
