The glass slipper may be turned off, but my PYN is down – let’s get into it.
There is something sacred for a room that is small with purpose. No lights. No stage. There is no red carpet, just a community, clarity and the kind of conversation that can only happen when they are really invited.
That is where I found myself this week, sitting opposite the Los Angeles mayor, the incomparable Karen bass, inside the gathering point, a cultural and creative hub known for the hospitality of voices with promotional thinking and deliberate dialogue. The event, curated by Rocsii Woolley, founder of LA’s source, was private, strong and deeply deliberate. No lint. No lint. Simple legacy in motion.
This was not a gradual photo OP or a town hall. It was an exchange of living room between the mayor of bass and a selected group of leaders, the students and the media’s minds, those who not only mention the block but rebuilt it.

Mayor Bass didn’t just appear … He was involved. With the transparency, strategy and kind of grace that comes from the work only. He answered honest questions about public security, ice and how citizens can be protected from illegal imposition behaviors. Does not avoid harsh issues. Instead, it has offered real steps for community security and encouraged all of us, especially media platforms, to stay connected. “Take care of me for media opportunities. I want to join,” he said. And the room felt it. You could hear a pen. You could feel people seeing as we got up, grabbed the microphone and asked the questions in our hearts.
One of the most enthusiastic moments came from a young student who asked, “How do we remain promising?”
Mayor Bass smiled, stopped and reminded us that hope did not come from news monitoring, it came from staying. Remaining rooted in Community work. Remaining in relation to leaders who are really present.
She also shared her own personal form of self-care and yes, we loved her for it. “I like to drive bicycles along the beach and swims. This is my treatment.” A reminder that even the city’s senior executive needs another time to exhale.
We go through issues such as city funding, fair resources and how to make our neighborhoods safer, smarter and supported. There was no indefinite political rhetoric – just straight answers, common accountability and a clear sense that we are not powerless.
And yes, I made sure that my places were free and style with babies. Because even in citizens’ spaces, black women appear hydrated, deliberate and ready to move mountains. There is something deeply strong to sit in rooms where public policy and polished curls can coexist.
But here is what made the moment unforgettable:

He didn’t talk to us. Talk to us.
It was shaped what it seems to lead with presence and purpose – to be in the community, not above it.
That is why I wrote the moment with the “unity” of Queen Latifah, because that was exactly what he felt. A room full of loud voices. A stroke from cooperation. A choir of purpose.
At Bass Mayor, thank you for taking and throwing.
For Rocsii and LA source, thank you for creating the kind of space that understands both the edges and the effects.
At the gathering point, thank you for housing this magic in a place that feels like culture and intention wrapped in one.
And to every woman who reads this: Keep your crown straight and your questions more intense. Because true change does not always look like a protest – sometimes, it looks like a curl and a press release in a room full of leaders.
