Spoilers for Materialist front.
Toward the end of MaterialistCeline Song’s exploration of dating and modern love contradictions, realistic professional predator Lucy (Dakota Johnson) reaches a superficial.
“When you love someone, it will be easy,” he says. “There is no mathematics.”
Until then, Lucy was based on a quantitative approach to determining races for its customers – and itself. The methodology based on her data also comes to her professional aesthetics, full of straight lines and types of neutral solids, as manufactured by the designer suit Katina danabassis. But as Lucy allows love in the equation, her wardrobe begins to bloom, sometimes literally with florals.
The elegant, simple composition of Lucy’s costume separates and classic, fine leather jackets are partly up-to-date with the experience of the song that works as a consul in New York-a fun fact that adds depth to the style style.
‘It was important to carry that [Lucy] Does not steal one’s shine when it came to its customers. He must be a professional and addressed to a high-level clientele, “Danabassis, who led the costume design for the latest (and very different) love-trial movie of the song, Past lives. “When you are a million Matchmaking, you have to look at the role and not meet as someone who is necessarily available.”
Lucy finally allows herself to be available when facing two options: the seemingly perfect financier Harry (Pedro Pascal) and her ex -boyfriend John (Chris Evans), a struggling actress who still lives with roommates.
In front, Danabassis leads us through how Lucy’s story unfolds through her wardrobe.
Lucy’s suit

Always focused, Lucy is aiming for young customers as she moves to work – and her clothes support the stadium. In the original scenes, he confidently proceeds to a strong push of Aritzia Blazer and the knee-high Paris Texas boots, causing almost financially Bro Robert (Eddie Cahill) having whiplash as he walks in the opposite direction.
“I really liked the idea of putting it in a power suit,” says Danabassis. “Not only because it’s a little fresh, but it seems to be something of a past era.”
Reflecting a sense of New York’s dress, the costume designer worked with the Blazer Pinstripe with a black mini skirt from a Versace suit and a white banana republic. “He just felt very New York, timeless, but powerful, modern, but overthrow-and virtual,” says Danabassis, referring to a distinctive memory of a woman in a skirt suit and dries the van noten-esque high boots stumbling on Bowery Street in Manhattan.
Danabassis also fell on an Easter egg. “It is also a nod for Little girl“He says, referring to the classic 1988 starring Johnson’s mom Melanie Griffith, whose character wore renowned sneakers with skirt suits in the office.
Lucy’s blue dress

Lucy is a leading artist at work – with nine weddings for her faith. It has still been invited to the last weddings of the two high -value (and high maintenance). Lucy chooses a strapless, draped Proenza Schouler dress in an impressive blue peacock that attracts the viewer’s eye and Harry, the rich, worthy brother of the groom.
“We need something that pops up, but at the same time, it should not be something that will steal any shine from the bride,” says Danabassis of her thinking, which led to the “origami” dress with Silver Bottega Veneta heels. “Also, the dress is not very strange. Actually, yes, that were A weird dress. We had to make sure it was perfectly tied [at the back]. But it was really simple. As, you can work on it. ”
Lucy Multitasks, such as a crisis that manages the cold legs of the bride, the charming strong young customers and the slip from the rich dance room to reconnect with John, a holder at the reception. She also agrees with a steam bath with Harry in return to agree to call her service.
“It’s a work function. Basically, it’s there to support, but not to be a fulflower entirely,” says Danabassis. “Because she’s still a woman in New York and doing her thing.”
Lucy’s date-night looks

Eventually she agrees to examine Harry – “a unicorn, a weak imagination,” as Lucy describes – as a perspective for herself and not for her loyal clients. Over a series of dinner dates (where they strategically evaluate each other through the methodical view of relationships), Lucy wears refined, simple pieces, such as a dark St. John Blazer over a leeset tank and a shellly segal laundry dress.
“It’s attractive to his sensitivities, which is just classic, elegant, luxurious and a little minimal,” says Danabassis.
When a previous skeptic lucy agrees to go all-in with Harry, lifts the signature black monochrome monochrome with an absolute Simkhai top, laying over a single bra heart and a vintage double blazer. Her knee, another tomorrow skirt, with dynamic margins (a more fun, the skirt she wears earlier in the film), takes her own life, as she and Harry make a dance from the corridors of the $ 12 million delicacies.
‘We thought it should [evolve from] It doesn’t try too much, too hard to upload, “Okay, I’ll do a little more here.” But keep the very New York, elegant, [and] Clean, “says Danabassis.” This black outfit popped the warmth of his apartment and the Gucci shoes were amazing due to the shine and the metal chain on the back. “
Lucy Flashback Florals

A retrospective reveals the emotional dismantling of Lucy and John, which happens when they were both actors with cash, but chased divergent goals and lifestyles. Lucy’s subtle hazelnut, Nili Lotan Straight-Leg Jeans and Loeffler Randall Mules feel emotional and promising.
“It’s the cute look you put together to go out for your anniversary,” says Danabassis. “This is not trying very hard or trying to match the same level as the man. She is really alone.”
Lucy also wears a sweet heart necklace purchased by austerity that reflects a different mindset from today’s Sleek Spinelli Kilcollin Rolo chain that telegraphic geometry.
“When he dates back to Harry, he is in this city,” says Danabassis. “When John is, he is more normal, grounded, floral and ethereal.”
Lucy’s “Revelation” outfit

John finally lands in a role in an off-off-Broadway game and invites Lucy, who now brings her friend Harry. Her uniform-a long black leather jacket from the 90s coach, White MNG Cami and Zara High-Waisted, spacious jeans are in the area of space and drink after appearance.
“He knows the world in which he enters, like a dingy Brooklyn Playhouse thing, but Harry does not know where he goes, so he wears” Oh, this is my country’s blazer, “says Danabassis, for Harry’s” Fit: A Tweedy Ralph Lauren Jacket, Caramel-Brut-Down, Hermès Dark Jeans, and Bottega Veneta Oxfords.
But Casual-Cool Ensemble also feels like a small revelation of her long-term emotions about John-and the precursor of an impending gap with Harry.
Wedding dress-crasher dress of Lucy

A traumatic event pushes Lucy to accept and follow her feelings instead of singing the numbers. It appears on the threshold of John with luggage full for a canceled Iceland with Harry. Then Lucy and John take a spontaneous movement upwards to crush a rustic wedding. Fortunately, John maintains a costume in the trunk of his car. Lucy apparently removes a floating, butter -made yellow dôen dress from her suitcase and does not change from Nike’s black shoes. Although the dress – with a curve middle of the empire, watercolor florals, fluttery Ruffles and Floral Appliqués – is causing the country’s wedding more than the luxurious holidays on the way to take.
“Mean, sureIt could have packed this for Iceland. Like, [Lucy and Harry] They went on a date somewhere, and she is trying to do her special thing and get more in harmony with herself. This is the idea there, “Danabassis explains.” Really, it’s just a romantic dress that hides the hidden theme of flowers as a symbol of love that was transferred to the whole movie. “
Kind of like completing a complex mathematics calculation while keeping all the variables along the way.
