Of Course Issa Rae Is Behind One Of These Days,

Just when we thought Hollywood had run out of fresh ideas, Issa Rae re-enters the conversation with her latest comedic gem, One of these days. Starring Keke Palmer and SZA, this unlikely couple has had fans buzzing ever since news broke in April 2024. While One of these days marks SZA’s feature film debut, her chemistry with Palmer previously aired in 2022 on Saturday Night Live. It was then that fans got a glimpse of the duo’s hilarious yet touching on-screen synergy. Now that’s the trailer finally Here, it’s clear that Rae has delivered another winner. Once again proving why she is a trailblazing force that continues to inspire us all with her authentic storytelling and commitment to uplifting diverse Black voices.

In association with Sara Diya Rastogi, Rae is producing the film through her production company, Hooray. The project features an impressive lineup of producers, including Keke Palmer and her mother, Sharon Palmer, as well as screenwriter Syreeta Singleton, Deniese Davis of ColorCreative, and Charles D. King, James Lopez and Poppy Hanks of Macro Film Studios . The film is directed by the talented Lawrence Lamont.

One of these days follows two broken best friends and roommates, Dreux (Pilgrim) and Alyssa (SZA) as they try to come up with the $1,500 monthly rent after one of their friends cheats on them. He takes their money to invest in creating a line of T-shirts. With eviction fast approaching, they only have one day to raise the money. From annoying borrowing attempts to humorous mishaps like SZA electrocuting herself while trying to retrieve a pair of Jordans from a live wire, their friendship is put to the ultimate test.

The all-star comedy cast includes Katt Williams, Janelle Jamesand Lil Rel Howery. This line-up alone is enough to make me buy multiple tickets, because I expect scary laughs and a much-needed escape from reality for at least 90 minutes. Ever since the trailer was released, social media has gone into a frenzy, with fans eagerly awaiting this hilarious action-packed comedy.

However, there will inevitably be some critics who hold different views, such as the veteran journalist Elliott Wilson. He simply captioned the movie poster on X with “Why?” This raises questions about double standards – why aren’t similar criticisms applied to male comedies? Considering the stars’ overwhelmingly positive reviews, online buzz and devoted fan bases, it’s clear that Wilson’s perspective is a minority view. It’s also worth noting that if the genders of the leads were reversed, this conversation probably wouldn’t even be happening.

There is no doubt that Rae has been a pioneering voice in Hollywood, creating narratives that authentically reflect the diverse experiences of black culture. Unlike many Hollywood productions that often perpetuate stereotypes, Ray consistently challenges the status quo by creating multi-dimensional characters that truly create a connection with fans. Her work through her production company, Hoorae, has played a vital role in pushing the boundaries of representation and providing disenfranchised people with a sense of belonging on screen.

Issa Rae’s journey to stardom began with the groundbreaking web series Awkward black girl on YouTube. Like countless others, the YouTube series was my introduction Issa Raeand it was one of the first times I really felt seen, heard and understood. The series quickly gained a devoted following and offered a refreshing and authentic portrayal of black womanhood. Contrary to the stereotypical portrayals often seen in the mainstream media, Awkward black girl showcased the complexities and nuances of our shared experiences, with viewers like me who have long felt underrepresented. The series launched Rae’s career and paved the way for more diverse and inclusive storytelling in the entertainment industry.

In 2016, Insecure premiered and changed the game with its honest stories that focused on the complex experiences of everyday life. Over the course of its five seasons, the series reflected on the ups and downs of growing up, navigating platonic and romantic relationships, discovering passions late in life, balancing family issues while building a career, micro-aggressions in the workplace, dealing with childhood trauma, mental health and so on. Still, it managed to pack these layered themes into hilarious 30-minute episodes that embraced the average face just trying to piece together their lives—one day at a time. Unlike other shows that usually focus on Black struggles, Insecure showed Black life in its everyday form of joy, resilience, frustration, love, awkwardness and so much more.

And then there was Rap Sh!twhich offered a raw and unflinching look at the music industry, particularly its treatment of women. While the series centered around an aspiring female rap group, it also explored the broader struggles and triumphs of its characters. From navigating financial hardship and single motherhood to discovering personal identity, Rap Sh!t resonated globally, proving that his themes were not limited to the world of music.

At times, Issa Rae’s ability to speak to audiences’ experiences on an emotional level has cemented her status as a beloved television personality. Rae’s influence is evident in the wave of new shows like Amazon Prime Harlem, Run The World on STARZ, BET’s Twenty, and more. Like Insecurethese shows follow a group of women navigating their relationships, careers, and friendships as young adults. These series, while not created by Rae, follow a similar formula of young black women navigating life’s challenges.

This shift empowered emerging talent and creatives, boosting the visibility of marginalized voices and fostering a more authentic approach to creating complex characters that center the narratives of historically excluded communities. In addition to pushing the culture forward, Rae’s commitment to introducing young black filmmakers makes her a dominant force in Hollywood. Hoorae bridges the gap for Black creatives, providing them with opportunities, access and, most importantly, funding to ensure their work reaches a global audience. One of these days is a typical exampleas he collaborated with diverse and up-and-coming screenwriters to develop the buddy comedy.

Given Rae’s track record, there’s no question One of these days it’s about to become another hit. The film’s humor and entertaining storylines already make it a pioneer for classic comedy. Judging by the trailer and social media buzz, fans are clearing their calendars for the opening weekend, which is likely to be a sellout when the film hits theaters on January 24, 2024. Don’t miss a second of the fun. Watch the trailer below.
