Podcast 228: Beauty: Vain Or Important?

Tired of being bombarded by unrealistic beauty industry standards and wondering if all these beauty products are really necessary? If so, today’s beauty opinion piece is for you.

Last week, we interviewed Erika Geraerts, founder of It’s All Fluff. In the episode, Erika shared her unique perspective on the beauty industry, challenging both consumers and brands to rethink their approach to beauty. If you haven’t yet, we encourage you to listen to this thought-provoking conversation as it could redefine the future of beauty consumption.

In this week’s episode of the Green Beauty Conversations podcast, Lorraine Dallmeier, Chartered Environmentalist, Biologist and CEO of Formula Botanica tackles the age-old question: is beauty just a vanity or is it really important?

Join Lorraine as she delves into the industry’s impact on our self-image and explores why we continue to use cosmetics.

“Beauty can be a form of self-expression and a means of feeling good about yourself, but we need to question the incentives of the industry and our own consumption habits.”

-Lorraine Dallmeier, CEO of Formula Botanica

Basic foods

  • Beauty as a social construct: Our standards of beauty have evolved. Historical beauty practices such as hair brushing and the use of artificial beauty spots show how social norms shape our perception of beauty.
  • The influence of the beauty industry: The beauty industry plays a huge role in promoting overconsumption. Big companies lead us to believe in the necessity of lots of beauty products or complicated skin/hair care routines.
  • The emotional impact of beauty: Beauty products can have a positive impact on people. There are many emotional and psychological benefits to skin and hair care that extend beyond just looks.
  • Makeup as self-expression: While the beauty industry often tells us that makeup is a necessity, it’s not. However, makeup can be a powerful tool for self-expression.
  • Contrast between legal definition and reality: Currently, legal definitions of cosmetics focus on beautification rather than health benefits. This creates a gap between regulatory language and consumer experience.
