“The retailers become the de facto gatekeepers of our industry, but at what cost?” – Lorraine Dallmeier

  • The retailers as new regulators: With slow government action, retailers have begun to enter the regulatory gap. They now require proof of trademarks to substantiate claims, keeping them responsible.
  • Challenges for indie brands: Compliance with any self -imposed pattern can be expensive and time consuming for smaller brands. This creates a heterogeneous field, as smaller brands can fight to compete with larger brands.
  • Patchwork standards add confusion: Beauty retailers define the standards differently, creating a “alphabet soup” of the requirements. For consumers, this can cause confusion and lead to confusion.
  • Larger brands performed on indie standards: Interestingly, some of the retailers of patterns adopting come from practices pioneered by Indie brands. This is pushing for larger brands to adapt, presenting how younger players continue to affect the industry.
