When was the last time you read the beauty brand viability report? If your answer is “never” you are never alone. Sustainability reports are often buried in company sites, covered by glossy marketing materials that feel more like a promotional brochure than a real disclosure of progress.
But what if you could look behind the curtain and consider what these brands do for the planet?
In this episode of Green Beauty’s talks, host Lorraine Dallmeier, a chartered environmentalist, biologist and chief executive of Formula Botanica, is deeply dived into the truth behind the claims of the viability of the beauty brand.
Following last week’s interview with Laura Rudoe of Evolve Beauty, who shared ideas for publication of viability exhibitions as an indie beauty brand, Lorraine is now turning her focus on industry giants.
Are big players real steps in sustainability or hide behind vague promises and selective data? Learn in this episode!
“Sustainability reports could be powerful change tools-but only if they are transparent, based on data and honest for the realities of their effects on the use of customers.” – Lorraine Dallmeier
KEYS PRODUCTION:
- What is missing from sustainability reports: Many references to large beauty brands are largely focused on glossy graphics and marketing claims, while not providing hard data. Key elements such as the scope of 3 emissions and details of the supply chain are often missing, leaving consumers in the dark for the real environmental impacts.
- The challenge of the field of application 3 emissions: Emissions of 3 emissions, which represent the majority of a brand’s carbon footprint, include raw materials, transport and products. These are difficult to measure, but vital to understanding the overall impact of a brand.
- Lack of accountability: Lorraine highlights examples of large brands that make strong claims, such as achieving carbon neutrality, while their actions are not aligned with these goals. This leaves significant gaps in accountability.
- The power of transparency: The brands that are openly discussing their struggles and their progress inspire more confidence than those that Airbrush’s challenges from their narrative. Lorraine encourages that all brands are transparent so that a significant change can be made.
- Calls to Action: Lorraine encourages listeners to critically examine viability reports, ask difficult questions and demand better than beauty brands to promote transparency and accountability.
