At the moment, we are facing a weak moment in beauty. The chips are under pressure to create a fully recyclable packaging. Consumers are expected to recycle properly, often with confusion or incomplete information. And regulators are pushing for emergency change without sufficient funding or infrastructure to support it.
Everyone is difficultBut the system is not ready and no one wins.
In this week’s green beauty episode, host Lorraine Dallmeier, biologist, chartered environmentalist and chief executive of Formula Botanica, collapses the messy and confusion of recycling in the beauty industry.
Following the episode of last week’s interview with Renata Daudt, this solo comment explores the unpleasant but necessary truth: legislation such as The new setup of EU packaging and packaging (PPWR) It comes – and forces the rapid change that the industry is not yet equipped to handle.
From the ecologically designed fees to the restrictions of local recycling systems, Lorraine examines why recyclable is not enough and why we need to foresee circularity. If you’ve ever been in front of a recycling bin you are not sure of what to do or felt frustrated by mixed messages about sustainable packaging, this episode is a must-listen.
“We are in a weak moment right now, but we are in it together, and if we can keep this tension – of progress and imperfection – then we can build something better for beauty.” – Lorraine Dallmeier
KEYS PRODUCTION:
- Recyclable does not mean recycled. Just because the packaging is technically recyclable does not mean it will be. Many local systems cannot process complex materials or colored plastics. Lorraine decompresses how this mismatch between design and infrastructure leaves all of everyone.
- PPWR creates chaos and momentum. The new setting of EU packaging and packaging is a player who changes the game, which states that all packaging should be truly recyclable by 2030, but the law is in front of the infrastructure and that the gap exerts pressure on chips, retailers and consumers.
- Financial sanctions push the change. Ecologically landscaped fees will make brands pay more to use the packaging that is difficult to recycle. This economic thrust is a crucial step towards making better packaging decisions, but it also stresses how far we need to move on.
- Tangled consumers, failed systems. Even the most dedicated ecological consumers are struggling to tour recycling labels and bins. Lorraine highlights the need for clearer guidance and more sincere communication than brands.
- Do not let recycling get out of real viability. Lorraine warns that if the industry focuses solely on recyclable, it is in danger of missing out on the greatest opportunity: reuse, refill and reduce the packaging. The actual circularity is much more than chasing the recycling symbol.
