Why you should book your next group trip on Vrbo
Things get a lot more complicated when you’re traveling in a group, especially this time of year. After taking into account the different needs and preferences of friends and family, finding an accommodation that keeps everyone happy can feel like a huge undertaking. To keep things simple, I’ve been recommending people book vacation rentals like Vrbo instead of hotels. It’s much easier to find something that checks all the boxes for everyone — especially when the kitchen and laundry are non-negotiable — and have a turnkey experience that feels like home.
I’ve stayed at my fair share of both Airbnbs and Vrbos, and there’s one thing Vrbo offers that goes above and beyond: in my experience, the Vrbo hosts I’ve met are all very communicative, knowledgeable, and passionate about their homes. On a recent Vrbo stay with my family, our host gave us a private mini-tour of all the art and antiques inside the house after my father expressed interest in learning more about the wall art. Vrbo, for its part, takes great care to train its hosts to provide the most welcoming experience: the platform offers Premier Host status in high star rated listings and have met a standard of excellence based on traveler reviews.
What really seals the deal for me? When you book on Vrbo, you’ll earn OneKeyCash through your stay, which you can also spend on your next Expedia and Hotels.com booking. This type of rewards program isn’t available when I book an Airbnb, and it gives me that extra incentive to be the “booker” for the whole family — and enjoy all the rewards.
What is OneKeyCash?
OneKeyCash is a membership program that allows you to earn cash rewards when you book through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Every time you book on these sites, you will see an amount of OneKeyCash that you can earn. This cash reward can then be applied to hotels, vacation rentals, cars, activities and flights.
You also have access to Member Rates, a category of special offers containing discounts of 10% on more hotels and up to 30% if you book a travel package that includes hotels and flights.
Is OneKeyCash Free?
Yes, you can join for free to access Member Rates, but with enough travel data in your belt, you’ll reach Silver or Gold status — allowing you to unlock even better special rates.
A travel item can be a hotel, vacation rental, flight or car rental reservation made with one of Expedia’s family of brands. You can upgrade from Basic to Silver status by earning five travel items in a calendar year and Gold status by earning 15 travel items.
The barrier to entry is significantly lower than, say, an elite membership on an airline, where you risk being demoted if you don’t fly 25 to 30 flights with the carrier in the same year. You can also collect enough travel data on a single vacation booking: for example, taking a single road trip with a two-night hotel reservation and a three-day car rental will earn enough travel data to promote you to Silver status.
