Hello friends! How’s your week going? Going away for a short stay – see mine IG stories for photos and adventures! – but for today’s post, I thought I’d share some fun activities to do with the kids while they’re home for Christmas break.
Enter the BIG sigh of relief and all the cheer for the Christmas holidays. I love having the kids home, and I especially love zero alarms (except on days I have to teach), late mornings, and seeing where the day takes us. Our weeks are very busy here between school, gymnastics and dance team, horse lessons and soccer, so it’s great to have a few weeks off. (Not months off. I’m not exposing it to the universe.)
While I still have to work while the kids are home, I try to pre-schedule as much as possible and book calls in blocks of time so we can have some fun adventures while they’re home. I thought I’d share some of my top ideas here and would love to hear what you’re up to with the family this winter break!
Winter Break Activities with Kids
Keep in mind that these are just ideas and a brainstorming list, and there’s no way we’re going to do all or most of the things here. I’m actually really excited to just CLEAN, but it will be great to have the lists in the afternoons when we’re looking for something to do!
Ideas for the house:
Camping in the living room
This was a huge hit when the pandemic first hit, and a way to set the weekend apart from all the other days combined. We baked s’mores, watched a movie and slept in a tent downstairs. I learned very quickly that I hate air mattresses lol but it was worth it for the memories for the kids.
Make slime
This is our recipe and you can add glitter to the mix for a sparkling snow slime
Bake something
We rarely have time to bake while the kids are at school, so this is a special opportunity to bake together
Simple science experiments at home
Did you know that learning can be both fun and enlightening? With a touch of scientific flair, you and your little ones can embark on a journey into the wonderful world of winter. From making frosting in a box to making your own snow, there are countless experiments that will make their eyes sparkle brighter than a starry winter sky. Not only will these activities engage their curious minds, but they will also give you a chance to bond with your kids and share some memorable moments together. So, gather up your lab coats and goggles – it’s time for some educational fun!
Teach them a recipe
This is one of my goals for this Christmas break! We have a gas stove so I’m not too comfortable using it yet, but I want to teach them how to make eggs and pancakes on ours large pan. It’s electric so it will be perfect for them to make breakfast (supervised of course).
Go on a scavenger hunt
Even though it’s a bit cold, we still get together and go for walks with Maisey every day. Make a scavenger hunt list before you head out.
Hike
You are absolutely right – within this wonderful desert landscape are some truly breathtaking trails that transform into a winter wonderland during this fun season. Picture this: a crisp afternoon, the air scented with just the right chill, and you and the gang set out on an adventure to explore one of these beautiful trails. The sight of the desert being adorned with a winter magic is a sight to behold! As you walk the scenic trails, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views, the serenity of nature, and the joy of spending time together. It’s the perfect way to combine a fun winter activity with a touch of exploration.

Read a book and watch a movie
Liv finishes the book Miracle, so I’m excited to watch it with the kids one of these nights. I think I might have the perfect indoor activity to go with it. Why not gather some family friends and teach your kids some important lessons about kindness and empathy while enjoying a movie night? Relax on the sofa, grab some blankets and snacks and watch the wonder of history come to life on screen. It is a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones while participating in an enriching activity. Plus, who doesn’t love a heartwarming story that inspires us to be our best selves?
Let them host a talent show or throw a dance party
This is one of my go-tos when I have errands to run — I put on some music and the girls dance and play while I clean
Karaoke
We have this bluetooth microphone and the girls sing it.
Play a board game or a card game
Zingo, Guess Who, Spinsterand UN they are all favorites.
Make a fort
Snowball games
Ah, the magic of winter! When the world transforms into a snowy wonderland and the kids come home from school with an extra pep in their step. And what better way to embrace the chilly weather than with an old-fashioned snowmobile race? Gather the family and friends, bundle up in warm layers and let the snowballs fly! It’s a perfect time for fun and to teach kids about teamwork and friendly competition. Just be ready to dodge the incoming snowballs and build your own snow fort. Who says you can’t have a blast while getting some exercise?

Create a Snow Globe
Time to unleash your inner artist and bring some winter magic into your home! Get creative with your kids and design your own snow globe. Start by finding the perfect size jar or container, then let your imagination run wild. Decorate the interior with miniature figures, a sprinkle of sparkling snow and maybe even a miniature Christmas tree. The possibilities are endless! Not only will this activity keep little ones entertained, but it will also provide a cozy indoor activity during those brisk winter days. And the best part? You will have a wonderful decoration that you will love long after the snow melts.

We are lucky that Mount Lemmon is only an hour away so we get to see some pines and snow! Imagine the excitement on your children’s faces as they experience the wonder of nature up close. Not only will you have the opportunity to teach your little ones about the beauty of our natural world, but you’ll also create memories that will last a lifetime. So grab your winter gear and prepare for a day filled with snowy escapades and laughs.
